During the Middle Ages, in the year 1373, Portugal and Britain signed an alliance of friendship and diplomacy. The treaty remains in force today and is the longest-running formal pact between any two countries in world history. The partners promise each other 'constant, mutual and perpetual friendship' assuring 'sincere affection' and undertaking to be 'friends to friends and enemies to enemies', and to 'uphold each other mutually, by sea and land'.
All along the sunny littoral of the Algarve, by sea and land, descendents of medieval politicians merrily uphold the ancient accord, living or holidaying together on continuing excellent good terms.
Titan Properties, property experts from the neighbouring Costa de la Luz in Spain, have made several new agreements with Portuguese developers, with a view to making friends across the border and endorsing the time-tested spirit of the Anglo-Portuguese treaty.
The best way to get an instant picture of why this spectacular coast is so unfailingly popular, is to look out from a window-seat on a 2-3 hour flight from any of the 26 UK cities served by Faro Airport. In dazzling sunshine, breakers curl on wide white shores, pools glitter in marshy estuaries, ferries float on rivers, flocks of flamingoes feed in lagoons. There are tiny coves under cliffs, clustered white buildings and yachts that unfurl their sails, preening like swans in the blue-green water. Inland, lakes and rivers gleam, golf-courses spread their sandy footprints on the lawns and terracotta rooftops settle deep amongst the trees.
It is plain to see that this coast is geographically and meteorologically primed for pleasure.
Gal? is a select area 10 kilometres from lively Albufeira, 30 minutes' drive west from Faro Airport, and 5 minutes walk from the beach, one of the best on the Algarve. This area has all the fascinating features you would want for an exciting or relaxing lifestyle, with walks along the cliffs, cycling, horse-riding or golfing. It has all the bright attractions of prestige shops, cinemas, restaurants, water parks, an aquarium, and even Sir Cliff Richard?s winery. Titan is promoting Ba?a Village, an appealing complex of 30 high-specification exclusive apartments with sea view terraces, a designer garden and pool. Prices for 1 and 2-bed apartments range from €239,800 to €329,800.
Just 14 kilometres east of Faro is Olh?o, a breath of Old Portugal, a quaint and traditional working harbour. It has a famous and atmospheric fish market which also trades fresh local fruit and vegetables. The marina is being extended, and Titan is selling the off-plan Marina Village, Ria Formosa, which takes its name from the surrounding nature reserve with estuarine waterways, islands and lovely beaches. The 1, 2 and 3-bed apartments will face the marina. The apartments will be finished to a very high standard, with wooden floors, air-conditioning, spacious balconies, roof-top pools for each block, and panoramic views. Prices range from €180,000 to €370,000.
Tavira is the enchanting antique jewel of the Eastern Algarve. It is a stylish old town with an air of faded refinement and its graceful squares are lively with people enjoying the Algarve lifestyle. Titan Properties are marketing Colinas da Boavista, a private complex built in the valley of the River Gil?o. Signature golf courses and fine sandy beaches take just minutes to reach. Faro Airport is a 25-minute drive west. Colinas da Boavista has 52 one, two and three-bed apartments and 8 three and four-bed villas in the first phase. It is low-density, well-finished, and has good views over Tavira, which is a five minute walk down the hill. Prices start at €232,900 for the single luxury 1-bed apartment and from €197,500 to €269,200 for the 2-3 bed apartments, and from €790,000 for the 3-4 bed high-end villas.
The culture and history of the Eastern Algarve, with its welcoming people, magnificent scenery, fabled beaches, legendary golf, year-round sunshine and high-quality building standards make it prime investment territory. According to the Overseas Property Professional Magazine, the Portuguese government has recently received a €21 billion EU grant, of which €1.5 billion is to be allocated to the Algarve alone, creating over 6,000 jobs in the next few years. Building is to be low-density; environmental policies have been implemented and the vast swathes of National Parks are sacrosanct, although providing magnificent opportunities for hiking trails, which are already under way. British and Irish buyers are the most active in the country at present, reflecting the main nationalities of the up to 20 million annual tourists.
These figures strike an ironic note - history makes its mark again as the new 'colonists' undertake their own voyages of discovery in Portugal, often from the very same shores that saw some of the most famous 15th C mariners embark on their quest for new worlds.
